A Letter from Kate (11/13/2007)
It’s funny how life works. I’m a standup comedian and mother of three. My children were a gift to me and to each other. They all got a year of nursing comfort and I enjoyed each and every moment, well almost. I stumbled into a comedy club because of my kids, as I needed to get out of the house and had many stories to tell about them. And because of my comedy “The Breast Feeding Diaries” stumbled upon me, yes Meadowbrook Press found me.
Breastfeeding my children was just the way it was, as they say, “Breast Is Best” and I was lucky enough to have the support and no complications so I was able to breastfeed. I hate it when women vibe other women because they weren’t able to or made the choice to bottle-fed. Being a woman is about supporting each other’s choices.
What they don’t tell when you’re pregnant because all your focus is on labor and actually giving birth is the extreme transformation you go through not only emotionally but physically after the baby is born. When your milk comes in and you wake up like someone just blew your breasts up like a water balloon waiting to burst and their bigger than your babies head the only things that get you through it is a good nursing bra, breast pump and sense of humor. Okay, I guess I should throw in a hungry baby.
After reading all the stories that were submitted by moms across America and I should say a few dads I felt like I belonged to a club of some kind. An inner sanctum of “liquid gold”, as us moms like to call it. I loved reading all the stories of mishaps and moments of breastfeeding misdemeanors. But what I loved most was that I related to all of them, no matter how different or similar to my own experiences they were. That’s the thing about humor it cancels out stress and brings everyone into the same moment. That’s what makes it so magical.
Writing my own experiences brought me back to a time gone by and missed. Reading all the stories were easy, choosing them was the difficult part but the ones I chose really did make me laugh out loud. I also really enjoy the format of the book as a mom I know how hard it is to get through a chapter. Each story in the Breastfeeding Diaries is a quick read so you feel like you’ve gotten through a beginning, middle and end, before the next feeding, diaper change, load of laundry, dishes, okay the list would take up my entire article, “we’re busy.” But a moment of laughter brought to you by moms just like you is Priceless.
I want to thank all of the moms who sent in their stories and for their experiences, through sharing it makes us all feel a little less insane. I look forward to sharing my standup comedy and speaking engagements on Parenting with humor and Balancing Life with Humor with all of you. I can’t wait for the next Diaries Book, The Toddler Diaries I hope it never ends.
Lastly I would like to thank Bruce, Angie, Jennifer, Elaine and everyone else who worked on the book.
